How it's being made
- 01
The mark drawn
A fine-line C with an O sitting in the aperture. Drawn as a single continuous weight so it could be stitched rather than printed.
- 02
Stitch scale tested
The mark checked at 55 mm, its size on the front panel, then shrunk to 24 mm and 12 mm to see how small it could go and still read, for things like a label. The front panel is the only place it's stitched. It still reads at 12 mm with no detail lost.

Stitch scale — 55 / 24 / 12 mm - 03
Line weight chosen
Four stitch widths run side by side and compared at 40 px, the size the mark appears at in a feed. 0.9 mm broke up, 2.1 mm lost the fineness. 1.6 mm held at both sizes and became the spec.

Weight ladder — 0.9 / 1.2 / 1.6 / 2.1 mm - 04
Hangtag artwork
50 × 90 mm, front and back, in ink and bone. Specification and care on the reverse rather than a slogan, and a line for the number, written by hand.

Hangtag — 50 × 90 mm - 05
First samples stitched
The first caps off the machine, to check the mark at size on real cloth rather than on screen.
- 06
Peak tested
A sample's flat peak bent round a mug overnight, to see whether it would take a curve and keep it. It took the curve and held it that evening, but had relaxed by the next afternoon: a curved peak needs shaping properly when the run is made.

Who made it
One person.
C.O is one person in Greater Manchester. I draw the artwork, set the specification, check the samples and post the caps myself. There is no team and no warehouse — the run is small because that is what one person can do properly. Everything above was worked out in public, including the parts that did not work first time.
